William D. Darby, 70, of 5975 County Road D, Boyd, passed away early Saturday morning, Jan. 16, 2010, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire, following a sudden illness.

William Dorsey Darby, son of Dorsey and Dorothy (Frye) Darby, was born April 28, 1939, in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He was raised in Gaithersburg, graduated from high school and during the Korean Conflict served with the U.S. Air Force in North Africa and Turkey. Upon his honorable discharge he returned to Maryland, where he was employed by the Montgomery County Police Department in Rockville. While working with the department he met Henrietta Trageser, the couple later married in 1976, in Etchison, Maryland. Bill, Henrietta and the boys moved to their farm in rural Cadott in 1976. In 1985, they returned to Maryland where Bill attended college, upon finishing his education he opened and operated a real estate appraisal business. He continued in this field when they returned to Wisconsin, buying his present home in Boyd in 1996. Bill had a very wide range of interests; he enjoyed photography, carpentry, gardening and helping others wherever he felt needed. He was a kind gentleman who often reflected his love of children and animals. He was very civic minded and on many occasions voiced his political opinion through letters drafted to the editor. He was an active member of the V.F.W. Post 2711 of Stanley, of the Chippewa County Republican Party, Charter member of the Montgomery County Police Alumni Association, and had extensive involvement with many Chippewa County committees.
Bill will be deeply missed by his son, William Dorsey Darby Jr. of Sun City Center, Florida; 2 grandchildren, Matthew and Michelle Darby; 3 step-daughters; brother, Robert Darby of Florida; 2 sisters, Mary Pearson and Lorriane Epling both of Maryland; special friend, Judy Peak of Eau Claire. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, James Michael Darby in 1988, and wife, Henrietta on Jan. 3, 2009.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Boyd, with burial in the Union Cemetery in Edson Township. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Boyd, and one hour prior to services Tuesday also at the church. The family is assisted by the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta.

Due to Bill's love for children, he had opened his heart to aiding orphanages in Haiti. In lieu of flowers, donations can be written out to: Servants of All Ministry. This donation will go directly to the orphanages that are part of the Haitian relief.
