James William "Bill" Stephens, age 87, of Astoria, Ill., passed away at 6:47 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011, at Wesley Village in Macomb, Ill.
He was born on Aug. 27, 1924, in Woodland Township, Fulton County, Ill., a son of James W. and Orlena (Bloomfield) Stephens. On Nov. 26, 1946, Bill married Ethel Mae Waggoner in Canton, Ill. She preceded him in death on Dec. 23, 2006.
He was also preceded in death by three sisters.
During his lifetime, Bill was a member of several organizations and served on the governing boards of the Astoria Fire Protection District, Astoria School District, MidCentury Telephone Cooperative, Fulton County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Illinois Shorthorn Association.
Bill was a lifetime farmer in Woodland Township and enjoyed raising purebred Shorthorn cattle, winning many awards at both state and county cattle shows.
Memorials may be made to the Ethel Mae Stephens Memorial at Graham Hospital School of Nursing in Canton, Ill.
