The following story is from the book "Loudoun County Families and
History" compiled by Jim Presgraves.
Joseph L. Verts was born and married in Loudoun County, and has here passed the years of his busy and honorable life. His birth was on the 8th of July 1821; his parents, now deceased, were William and Phebe Verts; and the wife whom he chose was Eliza Ann Baker. She was born in Loudoun County, September 21, 1826, and the date of her marriage with Mr. Verts was February 3, 1848. Her parents were George and Ann (Verts) Baker, and on her mother's side she is descended from the same pioneer family of Verts from which Joseph L. Verts is descended. Conrad Verts, grandfather of Joseph L., and maternal great-grandfather of his wife was one of the earliest settlers of Loudoun County. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph L. Verts have reared a family of six girls and seven boys, of whom all are living, and in Loudoun County, except the youngest daughter, Oda L., who died after five days' illness, in March 1882, at the age of fourteen years and four months. These children were named: George W., Lydia C., Charles E., Mary E., James F., Joseph A., Anna L., Jonah O., John H., Jane R., Isaac M., Foda C., and Oda L. Mrs. Verts had two brothers, Charles and George W. Baker, in the Union army during the War Between the States. Both were prisoners at Richmond, where Charles died in 1865; George was also wounded in 1862, near Leesburg. Joseph L. Verts is a farmer, and may be addressed at Oatlands, Loudoun County, Virginia.
