Our beloved Janet Lee Hindman Baker departed peacefully in her sleep in the early morning of Sunday, February 20th, 2022.

Janet's wish was to leave from HOME and that she did... At 93 (Born August 27, 1928), Janet was fortunate to have the care of her surviving sisters, Ida Mae (Dolly) Frances Carroll and Dorothy (Dottie) Aileen Hindman, both having spent their careers in healthcare. Janet was also in the care of Blue Ridge Hospice. The Blue Ridge team have been there every step of the way and the family sends their deepest gratitude for the compassionate approach they provided during this last year of Janet's journey.

Growing up during the depression, much like many families across our great nation, the Hindman family faced the bleakness and fear of that dark time. To make a horrific situation worse, unfortunately Janet's father, Frederick (Fred) Augustus Hindman died at age 38 leaving his wife Virginia Dixon Manuel Hindman a single mother to support 8 children. Like many families of that generation, they found their way through by banding together best they could.

As for Janet, she went to live with relatives. She cared for her Aunt Hilda, wife of her mother Virginia's brother Arch. There she would be tested by all measure of what it takes to care for someone suffering with Alzheimer's disease. That trauma was after Janet had to leave school in 8th grade to be sent to the isolation of a DeJohnette Sanitarium in Staunton VA. This is where many folks back then were sent for the treatment of tuberculosis. Janet had to endure being isolated once she was thought to have been infected after her father had been diagnosed with tuberculosis. He spent his last days there, he too in isolation. Again, these events shaped the sheer determination for Janet's generation of Hindman's and those that came after.

Imagine at a young age with the weight of the world on her shoulders, Janet learned to survive by developing a level of wit and charm so contagious that you'd literally wondered how it was possible for her to remember the endless things she could recite by heart. That wit became her lifelong trademark skill for all to ENJOY.

Janet was also blessed to be the charming Pied Piper for every child to lovingly follow. Not only the favorite Aunt to generations of family, but to countless children that became family. Janet's Gift: She made every child feel they were the most important treasure on earth. Special in every way? Appreciated and loved. Janet leaves with the love, admiration, and countless memories of several generations of family and friends.

Janet married late in her adult life to Meredith Arnold (Bill) Baker. Although their journey together ended when Bill unexpected passed away on February 17th of 1994, they are now reunited in the hereafter. After Bill died, Janet again worried how she would survive without her soulmate by her side, but as she did with every loss she faced, Janet focused on family. She spent her entire life bringing people together.

Janet never allowed the scares from life's journey to spoil her JOY. In her younger years, she loved organizing the Christmas gift exchange and Sunday dinner at Grandma Hindman's house. In her married life, she enjoyed homemaking and helping her husband raise two children. Throughout her life she stayed active with all sorts of talents: Sewing and quilting with sister, Ida Mae (Dolly), they have hand stitched more than 100 quilts, which represents their gift and legacy to many loved ones. Janet spent more than 50 years working in the Cornwell home caring for 3 generations of children. The Family sends a special THANK YOU to Nan Forbes and her family's lifetime of generosity and love. Janet loved working outside in the yard on sunny days, gardening to grow vegetables for canning and flowers for beauty and enjoyment.

Janet loved getting her hair done by Millie in the town of Purcellville. Her cakes and cookies have brightened the sprits of folks at her beloved Nichols Hardware (where her brother Arthur spent his career and met his wife Anne C) and many other family businesses in town. Our entire family enjoyed dining at the White Palace restaurant and then at the Purcellville Family restaurant. Bill and Janet shared their meals and their life going to that diner and they also were known to go dancing on the weekends. Purcellville was smaller back then and everybody knew pretty much everybody. Janet gave her time to people, and she gave herself to family with her generous heart, her welcoming smile and stories that brought much laughter and JOY. Janet truly lived a joyful LIFE. Janet loved getting her hair done by Millie.

Janet was predeceased by siblings: Kenneth Augustus, Mary Elaine Sisk, Iva Maxine Rose, Frederick Arthur, Robert Duncan and Cecil Wayne.

The family will receive friends at Hall Funeral Home, 140 S. Nursery Ave., Purcellville, VA 20132 on Saturday, February 26 at 1:00 pm. The service will follow at 2:00 pm, officiated by Chaplain Ken Patrick of Blue Ridge Hospice. The family would very much appreciate donations be made to Blue Ridge Hospice 333 W Cork St #405, Winchester, VA 22601 in honor of Janet's memory.
