Notes - From the book: The John Jackson and Esther Ann Werts Family History, compiled by Philip W. Allen, 1994
"Jake" (or J. L.) grew up on his father s farm and was himself a farmer and he also attended Indianola Methodist College. Soon after Jake married Margaret Robinson, he purchased and operated a drug store in Russell, IA for 19 years. In 1910 he saw the opportunities in the opening West and he homesteaded on the Shoshone Irrigation Project in northwestern Wyoming, operating a dairy farm there until he retired. He was President and Manager of the Project Telephone Company for about 15 years and managed the Big Horn Cooperative Marketing Association for 10 years. He was Representative to the State Legislature from Park County for a time. Jake enjoyed woodworking and built their Wyoming home in the little town of Garland, as well as much of their furniture. He invented and used his own motor-driven grass cutter. He wrote the first account of Werts Family History from which subsequent histories have sprung. He enjoyed traveling and acquired an early automobile, driving it in 1914 from Wyoming to Spokane, WA, so he and his brother Cliff, who lived in Iowa, each acquired auto chassis and constructed homes on them in order that might travel together. In this fashion they traveled to Florida and Southern California during several winters. Jake and Maggie participated in their church, Jake singing in the choir and serving as President of the Mens Brotherhood. Jake s grandchildren and great-grandchildren remember him as a wonderful stpry-teller. Jake and Maggie were married nearly 60 years and both were highly respected members of their community, loved by many.
