      Dr. James R. Carl, 46, assistant professor of ophthalmology and neurology at the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine, died of a brain tumor on Saturday, Jan. 14, 1995 at Montefiore University Hospital in Pittsburgh, Penn. He was the son of Don and Helen Carl of Storm Lake.
      Dr. Carl, director of the Visual Testing Service at the Eye and Ear Pavilion in Pittsburgh, had been acting chief of the National Eye Institute's neuro-ophthalmology section at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., before moving to Squirrel Hill in 1990.
      A graduate of Iowa State University, Dr. Carl received a masters degree in computer science from the California Institute of Technology and his medical degree from the University of Southern California. He did postgraduate work at the University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Carl was a member of a number of professional societies, including the American Academy of Neurology and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.
