Notes |
- Richmond Times Dispatch, March 19, 1904
Dr. Spottswood Wellford Carmichael died at his home in Fredericksburg last night shortly before 9 o'clock, in the seventy-fourth year of his age. His health had been frail for a year and his death was not unexpected.
Dr. Carmichael was born November 23, 1830, in the same house in which he died, and except during the war, when he served elsewhere as a surgeon in the Confederate Army, he practiced his profession Fredericksburg from the time of his graduation in medicine, a period of over fifty years. He was the third generation of physicians of his family who had practiced in the same town. In December 1861, Dr. Carmichael married, at Eagle Point, Gloucester county, Fannie Tucker Bryan, second daughter of John Randolph Bryan, Esq., who died in 1896. He is survived by two brothers, the Rev. James Carmichael, D. D. of Wilmington, N.C. and Mrs. Charles Carmichael, of Fredericksburg, and five children, Dr. Randolph B. Carmichael, of Washington; Mrs. Coalter B. Carmichael, of Baltimore, and Misses Elizabeth C., Nellie and Fannie Tucker Carmichael.
Dr. Carmichael was a most ardent Confederate and devout member of the Presbyterian Church. He was universally beloved and his death has caused general sorrow in the community where his long and useful life was spent.
The time of the funeral has not been definitely fixed, but it will probably occur Monday.
