      Ruth Marie Werts was born Nov. 26, 1922, at Hedrick, Iowa and passed away Sunday, July 6, 2002 at the age of 79, at her home in Russell, Iowa.

      Ruth grew up on a farm near Hedrick. She graduated from Hedrick High School in 1940. She attended Iowa Success Business College and worked at John Morrell following her graduation.

      She married Dean Werts Feb. 21, 1945, in Ottumwa, and they lived on two different farms in the Russell area. Their four children attended Russell Community School.

      Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Blanche Deutschle.

      She is survived by her husband, Dean Werts of Russell; her four children and their spouses: Carl and Ellen Werts of Russell, Rhea and Craig Weideman of Pensacola, Fla., Mark and Nadene Werts of Graham, Wash., and Lynn and Freddie Stuart of Chariton.

      She is also survived by eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; her sister, Mary Ellen (Bob) Moore of Oskaloosa; her brothers and sisters-in-law; Wilma Strait, Charlotte Werts, Burdette and Lois Werts, Dale and Deloris Werts; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

      Ruth was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Russell. She was also an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and the Lucky Thirteen Club. She enjoyed needlework, traveling, playing cards, shopping with the girls, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

      After her children had all graduated from high school, she and Dean enjoyed traveling and became "Snowbirds," spending winters in Florida, Arizona and eventually deciding that south Texas would be their permanent winter home. Ruth enjoyed her friends and her friendship was treasured by all.

      Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 9, at Fielding Funeral Home, with burial in the Russell Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jason, Justin and Jansen Stuart and Craig Weideman. Honorary bearers were Jaci, Chad and Gavin Werts and Brandy Japhet.
