VIRGINIA BEACH - Don Walker Korte Sr. died June 14, 2008, at the age of 88. He was a native of New Haven, Mo., where he met his lifelong love, Irene Korte, at age 3. His devotion to her and their family was unwavering. Mr. Korte was a retired lieutenant commander of the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. He spent two years on the island of Bora Bora in the South Pacific supporting the island's gun battery. Later, he was assigned to the USS Douglas H. Retiring from the Navy in 1959 after more than 20 years of service, Mr. Korte pursued a second career in banking. He received a bachelor's degree in economics from the Norfolk division of the College of William and Mary in 1961 and a master's in business administration from the University of North Carolina in 1963. He joined the audit department at Virginia National Bank headquarters in Norfolk in 1963, and retired in 1984 as associate general auditor. He was a certified internal auditor and served as president, secretary and on the board of directors of the Institute of Internal Auditors, Tidewater Chapter.

A resident of Virginia Beach's Alanton neighborhood for almost 50 years, Mr. Korte was active in his community and church. He held offices in the North Alanton civic league and coached the Great Neck community boy's basketball team, the Airedales, from 1966 to 1984. He was an elder and deacon of First Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach and a member of the E.M. Hardy Men's Bible Class and was a member and former president of Virginia Beach-Combers Kiwanis Club.
