Fire Kills 7 Children in Jerseyville Home
Jerseyville - A young father and mother stood by helplessly Friday as smoke and fire through their seven children, aged 10 and under.
Jerseyville police said a preliminary investigation indicated the fire in the two story brick home of Paul J. Taul, 33, was caused by a short circuit in the electric range.
Taul and his wife, Gloria Ann, 29, were able to escape from the home because they were farthest from the smoke and fire, but all efforts to re-enter the burning house by Taul were blocked by flames. Police said Taul tried to get inside but could not do so.
Fireman raced to the scene, just a block from the fire station and entered wearing gas masks. Six of the children were given artificial respiration and rushed to Jerseyville Community Hospital for emergency treatment but they were dead on arrival.
The youngest, one year old Paul Jerome Jr., died of burns. He was sleeping downstairs near the kitchen where the flames burned strongest.
The other children were on the second floor where the smoke was thick but flames apparently did not enter. They died of smoke inhalation.
They were Susan Valerie, 10; Joyce Marie, 8; twins Patricia Ellen and Michael John, 6; Jeffrey, 3, and Claire Elizabeth, 2.
State fire Marshals came down from Springfield to take part in the investigation.
