    • Verne C. McKinzie, 86, of Anderson, died Nov. 3, 2006, at St. John's Medical Center, following an extended illness.

      He was born Dec. 30, 1919, in Clinton County, Ind., and had lived in this area since 1941.

      On March 1, 1977, he retired from Delco Remy after 36 1/2 years of service in quality control.

      Verne served his country in the U.S. Army?s 79th Division Infantry, as a sergeant, during WW II, in Normandy. While serving, he earned four Campaign Ribbons, a Conduct Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, a Presidential Citation and Normandy Metal of Jubille.

      He was a member of North Christian Church in Markleville, U.A.W. Local 662 in Anderson, Madison County Art Association, Brown County Art Gallery, Anderson Art Center, Brown County Art Guild and the Madison, Indiana Art Gallery
      Survivors include his sister-in-law, Kathleen Smith of Lebanon; cousins, Howard McDonald of Indianapolis and Norma Beckett of Bowell; nieces and nephews, Kay and Dick Dunn of Frankfort, Jeff and Debbie Smith of Lebanon and Linda and Arnie of Lapel; close great-niece and great-nephew, Kelly and Scott Roberts of Lapel; several other nieces and nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. Also surviving are special friends, Dave and Mindy Driggers of Anderson and their children, Jared and Jessica Driggers.

      Verne was preceded in death by his wife of 58 1/2 years, Jean (Graham) McKinzie, who died Feb. 22, 2000; his parents, Elbert and Ruth (McDonald) McKinzie; and a brother-in-law, Ansel Smith.

      Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes and Crematory, South Chapel, 200 W. 53rd St., Anderson, officiated by the Rev. Gerald Burnett. Burial will take place at Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery where full military graveside rites will be conducted by VFW Post 266 .
