He married Vivian Katherine Smith on September 9, 1952. She was born February 2, 1925 in Jefferson, Maryland and died September 17, 1997 in Lovettsville. Both are buried in the Union Cemetery in Lovettsville.

Richard Henry Virts was born June 22, 1838 in Hillsboro,Virginia to Jacob and Pleasant Ann James Virts. He married Mary Amanda Baker on November 3, 1864 in Muskingum County, Ohio. Mary was born on April 28, 1840 in Loudoun County Virginia and died in 1918 in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Richard died February 2, 1923 in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Both are buried in Oak Hill Grant Avenue Cemetery, Crawfordsville, Indiana.
