Mr. Earnie L. Ayres, 86, of Shannondale, Harpers Ferry, W.Va., died Tuesday, March 2 at Winchester Veterans Administration Medical Center.
He was the husband of Edith Evelyn Painter Ayres. They were married in 1938.
Born in Brunswick on July 27, 1917, he was the son of the late Ernest L. Ayres and Emma Jane Leopold Ayres.
Mr. Ayres retired after 42 years as a carmen inspector with the B&O Railroad.
He was a member of St. Andrew's on the Mount Episcopal Church, Harpers Ferry, and former member of Grace Episcopal Church, Brunswick.
He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 948, Charles Town, W.Va., and a member of the B&O Veterans Administration.
In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter, Joyce M. Baker and husband Paul of Harpers Ferry; two grandchildren, Lana Miller and P.J. Baker; and two great-grandchildren, Courtney Baker and Hunter Baker.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Ayres and Delmas Ayres.
Funeral services will be held at St. Andrew's on the Mount Episcopal Church, Harpers Ferry, on Friday, March 5 at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Victor Lawson officiating.
Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Lovettsville, Va.
Friends may call at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town, on Thursday, March 4 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
The family suggests memorial contributions to St. Andrew's on the Mount Episcopal Church, Route 2, Box 453, Harpers Ferry, W.Va. 25425; or Blue Ridge Fire Department, Rt. 1, Box 740, Harpers Ferry, W.Va. 25425.
