Death Comes En Route To City Hospital Saturday Night; Driver Released After Accident Verdict.

Dr. James G. Shirer, 67, practicing physician here for 38 years, died Saturday night en route to the City hospital of injuries suffered shortly before, when he was struck by an automobile as he crossed West Main street to go to his car.

The accident occurred in the block where he had had offices for more than 35 years and his death is the first due to an automobile accident in the city this year.

Dr. Shirer had spent some time in the Jeffries Bros. Store in Fifth street and then walked to the Hamburger Inn, around the corner, for a lunch. About 8;30 p.m. he left and started across the street to where his car was parked on the north side, just west of his office.

The car that struck him was being driven east by Robert King 20, 84 North 25th street. King, it was learned, had passed an eastbound city bus in front of the Smith Cleaning establishment, and took his place in the line of traffic and ran upon Dr. Shirer about 135 feet from the Fifth street intersection. He swerved his car north in an effort to avoid the pedestrian and stopped the car a few feet from the north curbing in the street.

      Died En Route to Hospital

Dr. Shirer, suffering from a fractured skull, the back of his head showing a gash where he struck the pavement, was placed in Criss Brothers ambulance, but he died before reaching the hospital.

Police Captain Horace Wheller and Officer Kerns investigated and King was taken to headquarters and held under $1000 bond, charged with involuntary manslaughter. Later he was released when the bond was furnished. Acting Coronor Dr. Paul C. Keller with Deputy Sheriff William McElroy investigated Dr. Shirer's death and Dr.Keller gave a verdict of accidental death.

The death of Dr. Shirer takes one of Newark's oldest physicians and one of the most widely known throughout the county.

He was born Oct. 6,1872 in Coshocton the son of Winfield S. and Cidna (Decker) Shirer. After finishing the Coshocton schools he chose medicine as a profession and started Starling medical school in Columbus, where he was graduated in 1896.

      Came Here in 1902

He started his practice in Cardington and later went to Otsego but located in Newark in 1902, where he had since practiced. For several years he was associated with the late Dr. B. F. Barnes. At one time Dr. Shirer served the B.&O. railroad at this point as medical director and he was also a member of the Licking County Medical society andthe state and national medical fraternities.

He was a member of Newark lodge, F.&A.M., Warren chapter, Bigelow council, St. Luke's commandery, Shrine and Scottish Rite; also the Knights of Pythias and Newark lodge of Elks.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Laura Shirer; two brothers, Roy H. Shirer of Cleveland and Flay E. Shirer of Newark.

The body was moved to the Gutliph & Henerson funeral home and will be taken to the family home, 237 West Church street today. Services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the home with Rev. L. C. Sparks and Rev. Thomas Wood officiating. Burial will be made in Cedar Hill cemetary.
