Mr. John Benjamin Funk, 87, formerly of Brunswick, died Tuesday, March 16, at Hanover General Hospital, Hanover, Pa. He was the husband of Evelyn Robinson Funk of Towson. His first wife was Doris Dindore Funk who died in 1953. Born April 20, 1905, in Hillsboro, Va., he was a son of the late Harry B. and Annie B. Demory Funk. Mr. Funk was a graduate of Brunswick High School class of 1922. He earned his BS degree in engineering and was Phi Beta Kappa at Washington and Lee, of Virginia in 1926. He served as Brunswick City Engineer from 1929 until 1984. He served in the Maryland Assembly for 12 years from Frederick County, and in 1947 he became Secretary of State for Maryland. He also was chairman of the State Planning Commission and director of the State Roads Commission. He was confounder of the Brunswick History Commission. Mr. Funk was also nationally known for the Potomac Club Orchestra. He was a Mason with his 50-year pin, and former member of Brunswick Lodge 91. Surviving wife his are three sons, John D. Funk of Sykesville, Harry B. Funk of Lutherville, and William B. Funk; and one granddaughter, Allison Maxwell of Philadelphia, Pa. Mr. Funk was preceded in death by one daughter, Anne L. Maxwell; one son, J. Ben Funk; one brother, Raymond D. Funk; and one sister, Eva V. I. Magalis. The family will receive friends 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, March 18, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, March 19, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Frederick County Chapter, 125 E. Patrick St., Frederick, Md. 21701.
