      ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following information has been graciously provided by Jeanie Virts LaGrave.

Robert and Ralph Hume Virts had a very close relationship. Robert worked for Ralph on his farm for many years and lived in the home being a family member. Robert was single for many years and adopted his nieces and nephews as his own. After being injured fallen off of a hay wagon, he moved back in with his parents, Bertha and Emory and went to work for Todd Steel. He worked there for several years and then got a job a the Frederick Trading Company. He worked there until his death.

Robert married Charlotte Gibbs, who lived on the farm across the road (once the Shellman Farm.) They had known each other and dated for years. They were both past 40 when they married. She devoted her youth to caring for her ill mother and when her mother died, she entered nurses training in Charlottesville, Virginia. After she and Bob (as we called him) were married they lived in Frederick, Maryland for a while and then bought a house in Bartonsville, Maryland. They living there when they divorced, after being married 10-15 years.

Bob continued to live in this house until his sudden death from diabetes related complications. We really don't know exactly what he had died from, but he had had very severe diabetes a few years prior to his death. He died in his bedroom on the morning of March 22, 1984 and was found by Ralph and Florence Virts. He had missed a doctor's appointment and the doctor's office called Bertha and Emory's house to see why. They had not heard from him all day, which was very unusual, so they asked Ralph to go to Bob's home to check him. The doors were all locked, so Ralph called the Sheriff's office and they had to break into the house. This was quite a shock on everyone in the family, because we have all been so close, with Bertha and Emory being the hub of the family.
