      Lester J. Van Nice, 78, of Russell, died Saturday, June 15, at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, of heart failure.

      Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 19, 1996, at Bethel United Methodist Church in Russell, with burial of the cremains at the Russell Cemetery.

      Born in Russell, Iowa, he lived in the Russell area most of his life. He farmed and raised horses.

      During W W II he was a member of the Army Medical Detachment of the 168th Infantry and was a prisoner of war in Germany for 27 months.

      Lester was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church in Russell.

      Survivors include two sisters: Isabelle Winship of Warden, Wash., and Sue Tinder of Indianola; five nieces and nephews; and several great nieces and nephews.

      The Overton Funeral Home in Indianola was in charge of the arrangements.
