Ralph Waldo Werts was born July 16, 1904 on the family farm southeast of Russell, being the youngest child of Clifton Elmer and Clara Mae McCoy Werts. He died at the Lucas County Memorial Hospital Tuesday afternoon, August 15, 1978, at the age of 74 years and 30 days.

His entire life was spent on the farm in Washington Township until he semi-retired in 1960 and moved into Russell. Ralph lived on the farm where he was born, now known as the "Werts View," where his youngest son farms. Ralph attended the John Russell rural school and the Russell school.

Ralph was united in marriage to Alice Vera Wright on Easter Sunday, April 4, 1926, at the First Baptist Church. They lived on the home farm 34 years. Three children blessed this home.

Ralph was known to be an industrious farmer and a trustworthy friend. As a teenager he accepted Christ as his saviour in union services held in a tent near the Methodist Church. With a group of other young people, he was baptized in the First Baptist Church. He placed his membership in the Methodist Church. In 1930 he transferred his membership with his wife's to the First Baptist Church. He remained faithful in attending services and in earlier years served on the board of trustees. Ralph was a quiet man, his words were fitly spoken and the family will remember many things "Dad said." After moving into Russell he served on the town council for a few years.

After partially retiring, he , his wife and daughter spent 15 winters in Florida.

Survivors include his wife, a daughter, Mary Lee Werts; two sons, James E. Werts and R. Burton Werts; two daughters-in-law, Beverly Werts and Karen Werts; four granddaughters, Wendy Blue, Terry Elmore, Cindy Werts and Rhonda Werts; one grandson, Bruce Werts and three great-grandchildren, Jeremy Blue and Kelly and Conrad Elmore, all of Russell. Two brothers Harvey R. Werts and Richard R. Werts, both of Chariton and a host of relatives and friends.

Services were held at the First Baptist Church in Russell, Friday, Aug. 18, at 1:30 o'clock conducted by the former pastor, the Rev. Glenn Amos of Romeoville, Ill. Honorary bearers were Warren Blue, Allen Dixon, Lee Cottingham, Loren Goltry, Lee LaRue and Ted Smith. The pallbearers were Max Arnold, Dean Coles, Wilbur Dawson, Edwin Johnson, Robert Parker and Bob Wilhite. Burial was in the Russell Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Fielding Funeral Home.
