  "No Newspaper/No Date ANCIL E. GOOKIN "Ancil Earl Gookin, eldest son of Arthur E. and Mary A. Gookin, was born near Russell, Iowa, July 21, 1922, and departed this life by accidental drowning at Crane Lake, Minn. June 7, 1964 at the age of 41 years, 10 months and 16 days. "He attended the rural school in Lucas county and graduated with the class of 1940, of Russell high school. He then attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines and after his graduation he worked for the War Department in Washington,D. C., later transferring to the Department of Agriculture in Madison, Nebr., where he worked in the Soil Conservation office until he entered the Air Force. "On January 24, 1943, he was united in marriage to Pearl Fundum and to this union one son, Jon Arthur, was born. In September of 1942 he enlisted in the Army Air Force and entered the service in March 1943. He served as a Navigator in the 15th Air Force, stationed during the war at Foggia, Italy, flying 51 combat missions. "In his early life, he converted and united with the Russell Methodist Church under the pastorate of the Rev. J. E. Clark. He was a member of the V.F.W. and was manager of Little League Baseball for several years. His main hobbies were fishing and hunting with his son, Jon. "For the past 16 years he served as Des Moines district manager for Western Land Roller company, located at Hastings, Nebr. "Survivors include his wife, Pearl; his son, Jon; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Gookin of Russell; and his brother, Roger and family of Longmont, Colo. Also his aged grandmother of Englewood, Colo., uncles, aunts and cousins. His friend were numbered by his acquaintances and he will be sadly missed by both friends and relatives. "Funeral services were held from Dunn's Funeral Home in Des Moines Thursday, June 18, 1964, with interment in Glendale cemetery."
