  • Notes
    • Walton Bruce Eamich Sr., 87, of Purcellville, formerly of Ashburn, an Army veteran who served for 50 years with Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue, died March 3 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Mr. Eamich was born June 1, 1920, in Waterford to the late Bruce Mock Eamich and Daisey Dean Eamich. He graduated from Waterford High School in 1937. He served in the U.S. Army 12 Airborne Squadron in the Philippines during World War II.

Mr. Eamich was a lifetime member of the Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue, serving as chief for seven years and assistant chief for 12 years.

"Some chiefs are administrators, politicians, accountants, but Walt was a firefighter," said Melvin Byrne, Division 7 chief of the Virginia Department of Fire Programs. "Operations was his focus ... he looked out for the firefighters. He was careful to gather all information needed to make a good decision at the emergency scene. He didn't give an order until he had done a good size-up of the situation."

At the Ashburn fire department, he started the junior program for teens ages 15-17. Based on his research, the department changed its emergency equipment colors to yellow for safety.

He was presented the 1991 Loudoun County Chamber of meretorious Service Award, and the 2003 Loudoun County Fire Service Hall of Fame Award for "his exceptional and distinguished service to the citizens of Loudoun County Virginia."

Mr. Eamich also worked as a plumber for Arlington County Public Schools. He was a trustee and deacon of Ashburn Presbyterian Church. Years ago, he played men's baseball in Loudoun.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Marian Louise Caylor Eamich of Lovettsville; his son, Walton B. Eamich Jr. of Purcellville; and three grandchildren.

Mr. Eamich was buried in Leesburg Union Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, 11240 Waples Mill Road, Suite 402, Fairfax, VA 22030; to Ashburn Presbyterian Church, 20962 Ashburn Road, Ashburn, VA 20147; or to Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue, 20688 Ashburn Road, Ashburn, VA 20147.
