Charles Martel Werts, son of John Jackson and Esther Ann Werts, was born near Russell, Iowa on the 18th of October, 1876 and died in Des Moines, Iowa January 4th, 1946.
His early years were spent on a farm two miles southwest of Russell. He attended the Ragtown Country School and Russell High School and had one year at Parsons College. He then decided to study medicine and went to Iowa City where he spent six years at the State University and graduated in June 1902 with the degrees: B.S., M.S. and M.D.
He was married in July of that year to Mary Grace Clarke of Des Moines and they set sail at once for Europe, where he spent a year in study at Leipzig and Vienna, specializing in diseases of the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat. On their return to this country he began practicing his profession in Des Moines, where he conscientously served humanity for over 40 years.
He confessed his faith in Christ and accepted Him as his Saviour when about 16 years of age and united with the Russell Presbyterian Church. Later, he transferred his membership to Central Presbyterian Church of Des Moines. He was a member of the Capitol Lodge, the Des Moines Club and a number of medical organizations.
He went back to Europe when he felt the need for more study to keep him abreast of the times in his profession.
Dr. Werts retired from his practice three and one half years ago because of ill health and finally succumbed to the dread disease, Leukemia.
A private funeral service was held January 7th at the Dunn Funeral Home in Des Moines, conducted by the Rev. L. M. Grigsby.

Charles attended Parsons College for one year then finished his Bachelors degree at the Univ. of Iowa. He continued there, receiving his Master and Doctor of Medicine degrees in 1902. Upon graduation he married Mary G. Clark (known as "Mame") at Russell, IA. To obtain the best education in his specialty of eye, ear, nose and throat diseases, he studied in Leipzig and Vienna before returning to Des Moines, IA, to practice. He returned to Europe later for further study. Mame moved to Pottstown, PA in the early 1920
s and lived apart from Charles for the rest of their lives. Charles practiced medicine in Des Moines for 40 years. Throughout his practice, he provided his brothers and sisters and all their children and grandchildren whatever treatment he could without charge. If the relatives lived outside Des Moines he even opened his home to them for later periods of recovery from surgery. Charles was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, the Capitol Lodge, the Des Moines Club, and several professional medical organizations. Charles died of leukemia.
