| Notes |
- Note is from the Barnes, Family Tree Maker Page Website
They were true pioneers of Kiowa County. In September, 1884 they moved to Tipton, Iowa, where they lived for several years, coming to Kansas in 1885. They first came to Kingman, Kansas in the spring of 1885, that fall they moved on to Edwards County but the county changed to Kiowa in 1886. Mr. Barnes settled on school land, which could be bought then for what is considered a trifling sum. In passing it should be mentioned in all the 44 years he owned the land there never was a mortgage on it. Wendell, a small town 12 miles north of Greensburg is where they got their mail. Wendell boasted two stores, a blacksmith shop, a post office and a dozen houses. This was the main trading post for the Barnes community.
The Barnes went through many hard times--prairie fires, and the big blizzard of 1886 when they lost part of their livestock. Coming through the trials of pioneer days, they managed to find here and there a bright spot in the darkest hours. They were very optimistic and took an interest in community, state and national affairs. They reared eleven children. In later years their chief delight was in the companionship of their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, who occupied a large place in the affection and interest of this old pioneer couple.
