Joseph was born June 21, 1839 in Lovettsville, Virginia to Adam and Susan Ann Lilly Virts. He died January 21, 1911 in Lovettsville. He married Sarah A. Long on October 8, 1859. She was born January 18, 1832 in Loudoun County Virginia. She died April 7, 1925 in Lovettsville. Both are buried in Mt. Olivet Methodist Church Cemetery in Lovettsville Virginia.

J. H. Clapham, auctioneer, sold on the 9?sup?th?/sup? instant, for John H. Lynn, executor, the farm of Elizabeth Lynn, deceased to Edward Simons for $40.25 per acre, and a lot on Short Hill, to Emanuel Ruse, for $5.50 per acre. On the same day, the same auctioneer sold for the heirs of John Long , deceased, his farm, at the base of Short Hill, for $25 per acre, Joseph L. Virts, purchaser. Also, a wood lot on the mountain for $3.85 per acre, J. J. Stevens, purchaser.
