    • John was the son of Samuel and Sarah Harper Virts. He was 5 feet 9 inches in height with a dark complexion, gray eyes and dark brown hair. He enlisted on July 3, 1862 at Waterford, Virginia by Captain J. C. Means in the Loudoun County Independent Rangers, Virginia for 3 years.

      He was captured and wounded in the battle of White's Command, June 17, 1863 at Point of Rocks, Maryland.

      He was mustered out on May 31, 1865 at Bolivair, Virginia. He had a $2.41 clothing allowance due and a bounty due of $100.00
