      Rachel S. Mattison, 88, formerly of 814 7th Ave. East, Ashland, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Ashland Health & Rehabilitation Center. She was born August 25, 1913, in Highbridge, the daughter of John and Mary (Polomaki) Willing and attended the North York School.

      She married Nillo Nurmi in August of 1933 in Bessemer, Mich. He preceded her in death in December of 1958. In September of 1962 she married Hammond Mattison in Milwaukee. He preceded her in death in September of 1979. Her bobbies included flower gardening, baking, knitting and spending time with her grandchildren.

      Surviving are two daughters, Margaret (Roy) Provost of Ashland, and Mary Ann (Donald) Pinoniemi of Ridgeway, Mich.; a son, John (Rita) Nurmi of Mercer; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; a step-daughter, Gail (Doug) Bethel of Muskegon, Mich.; a step-son, LeRoy (Mae) Mattison of Phillips; four step-grandchildren; a sister, Elsie Decker of Commerce City, Colo.; nieces and nephews including a special niece, Kathleen Berweger of Las Vegas, Nev. and other relatives and friends.

      Besides her two husbands she was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Senia Foley; two brothers, John and Ruben Willing.

      The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Roberts Funeral Home in Ashland. Rev. Kent Seldal will be officiating.

      Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the Roberts Funeral Home.
      Interment will take place in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Ashland.

      Memorials may be made to Regional Hospice Services, Inc., Ashland.
