Cornelius was born August 22, 1825 in Loudoun County, Virginia to Conrad and Elizabeth Derry Virts. He died April 24, 1906 in Sandy Hook, Maryland. He married Catherine Ellen Enniss on December 2, 1850. She was born January 22, 1834 in Maryland and died October 31, 1892 in Sandy Hook. Both are buried in the Reformed Cemetery in Knoxville, Maryland.

Mrs. Catharine Virts, wife of Mr. Cornelius Virts, of near Weaverton, Washington County, and a lady well-known and very highly esteemed, died on Monday last, aged 55 years. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the M. E. Church, Knoxville, this county, of which she had been a life long and a consistent member. Deceased leaves a husband, five daughters and two sons. One of the daughters is the wife of Mr. John Eldridge, of near Myersville.
