- Thomas Jessup, born in Florida, NY, was the sixth child born to Rebecca Armstrong and Samuel Jessup. Samuel had moved his family from Southhampton, Long Island to Florida, NY, and set up a tanning business with his older brothers.
Thomas owned a successful dry goods store at 96 Water Street in Newburgh. By 1867 he began to specialize in tea, coffee and spices and moved his store to 29 Second Ave. Mr. Jessup had three wives; Gertrude Bogardus Deyo, Leah Catharine Deyo and Sarah Crane.
