Services for Chester G. Shirer, 72, were held at the Woodman Funeral Homa on Saturday, August 21, 1965. The Rev. Eldon Jandebeur, pastor of the Chariton Christian church officiated. Burial was in the Russell cemetery.
Mr. Shirer was born December 21, 1892 at Melrose, Ia., the son of Wilbur and Louella Graham Shirer. Following the death of his mother when he was 18 months, he was cared for in the home of his grandmother Shirer in Russell. His early youth was spent in Ridgeway, Mo., where he attended grade school. After his father's death in 1905, he returned to the Russell home of his grandmother and his aunt, Miss Lizzie Shirer. He was graduated from Russell high school in the class of 1909.
On September 2, 1914, he was married to Cora L. Dixon. The fiftieth anniversary of this wedding was celebrated at the Russell Presbyterian church in 1964. The Shirers resided on the Pine Knoll Farm west of Russell for the entire period of their married life.
During this time he was active in agricultural organizations, serving on the boards of the Farm Bureau and the A.A.A. He sponsored many projects among 4-H clubs in Lucas county. In 1961, he was named Iowa Master Farmer.
In the Russell community he will be remembered for his continued loyalty and participation in the town band. He was a staunch supporter of the Rural Fire Department and the Russell Community school. He entered enthusiastically into the activities of the Sportsmen's club and athletic events.
