MOORE - Leo H. Moore, the first child of Harley and Dora Moore, was born February 27, 1900, at Russell. He was raised on a farm near Russell with his two younger sisters and three younger brothers.
Leo was a 1919 graduate of Russell High School. He attended Parsons College at Fairfield, and taught in White and Highland rural schools.
Leo and Helen Goltry were married May 3, 1930. They spent the next 50 years farming near Russell. Two children were born to Leo and Helen, a daughter, Karen, and a son, Grayton. Grayton died in 1952, at the age of two and one half years.
Leo was a lifelong member of Faith United Methodist Church in Russell. He was a former member of the Russell Lions Club, and the Lucas County Farm Bureau. He served for several years on the Lucas County Agricultural Stabilization Committee. He also served as a member of the Russell Community School Board.'
He and Helen retired from farming in 1980 and moved to Chariton. He was walking near his home November 21, 1988, when he was struck by a car. He was hospitalized as a result of the accident. He passed from this life January 25, 1989, at the Chariton Manor nursing home.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Frank and Carl; and one sister, Martha Nesbitt.
He is survived by his wife, Helen, daughter, Karen Hoffman of Stillwater, Minn., son-in-law Chuck Hoffman, Stillwater, Minn., two grandchildren, Kaleena and Jefferson Hoffman of Stillwater, one sister, Enid Davis of Chariton, and one brother, Richard of Marathon. He will be missed by his ten nieces and nephews and many friends.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 28, 1989 at the Fielding Funeral Home with the Rev. Tompsie Smith officiating. Serving as bearers were Ivan Ford, Lee LaRue, Ross Wasson, Jerry Davis, Gary Miller and Floyd DeWitt. Interment was in the Russell Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Faith United Methodist Church in Russell or to the Chariton Manor.
