James H. Burnight 77 of Newbury Park died Wednesday Nov. 1 2000 at Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks after a short battle with cancer.
Mr. Burnight was born April 28 1923 in Arkon Iowa the first of four sons born to James E. and Marjorie B. Burnight. In 1927 the family moved to Los Angeles. He graduated from Venice High School in the summer of 1942. Within two weeks he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Pacific throughout World War II and was discharged in 1946. In 1947 he started working for the Associated Telephone Co. in Santa Monica which became GTE in later years. Mr. Burnight worked for them in Torrance Lancaster and Newbury Park until April 1988 in which time he retired in 40 years service.
In 1949 he married Vivian Bassett and had no children. From 1950 to 1954 Mr. Burnight served as a Santa Monica reserve police officer. In 1994 Mr. Burnight started managing the Conejo Mobile Home Park for Wespac Group until Nov. 1 2000.
Mr. Burnight was preceded in death by his parents James E. and Marjorie B. Burnight; brother William F. Burnight and wife Vivian Burnight.
He is survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law Tom and Marji Burnight of Carpinteria Cecil J. and Bea Burnight of Ventura; nieces Cathy Holliman of Lake Havasu Ariz. Betty Burnight of Desert Hot Springs Kim Brown of Lake Forest and Marine Bavuso of Bakersfield; and nephews Patrick Brunight of Boise Idaho Michael Burnight of Lake Havasu Ariz. Dewayne Burnight of Lancaster and Russell Burnight of Simi Valley.
The services will be handled by the Neptune Society of Santa Barbara.
