Funeral service for Helen Hackley, 99, Sidney, was 11 a.m., Saturday, March 19, 2011, at the Assembly of God Church with Pastor Les Anderson and Rev. John "Bud" Brown officiating.
Musical selections were provided by Laura Thiel. Casketbearers were George Thorgramson, Doug Watts, Marty Casey, Arnie Thiel, Dennis Nelson and Chris Thiel. Honorary casketbearers were all of Helen's grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Ushers were Blaine Watts, Chad Burns, Terrance Rohner, Zane Spoklie and Zach Blotsky. Interment will be in the Cherry Creek Cemetery under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney. Remembrances and condolences may be shared with the family at www.fulkersons.com.
Helen was born on March 2, 1912, the daughter of Christian Karl and Florence Hanna (Hurd) Sjostrom in Sioux Pass. She grew up and attended schools in the Sioux Pass Flats graduating from Sidney High School in 1931.
Helen was united in marriage to W. Leo Hackley on July 14, 1932, in Scobey. After the marriage, they made their home on Leo's family homestead where she lived for more than 35 years. After her children were grown, Helen attended Bible School in Jamestown, N.D., for six months. Helen worked in home health for six years in Sidney where she enjoyed taking care of others. She entered the Sidney Health Center Extended Care facility in September 2003.
Helen was baptized in the Missouri River. She attended the Sidney Assembly of God Church where she loved to sing. She enjoyed spending time learning how to cook, clean, sew and milk cows with her mother.
At the age of 14, Helen won first place in a 4-H contest at Sioux Pass making a grey wool dress. Then she won first place at the Richland County Fair and then went on to the Midland Fair in Billings where she also took first place. Helen enjoyed going to Glacier Bible Camp with her children, then later even with her grandchildren, even later her daughter Kathryn took her. She loved attending Aglow, Missionary Hand's meetings and making quilts for overseas. Christian Women's Club also was a highlight of her life.
Helen enjoyed visiting with people and her neighbors. She never met a stranger. Helen's favorite vacation was spent in Chicago, visiting her aunt and two uncles.
Helen died on Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at the Sidney Health Center Extended Care facility.
Surviving her are: her son, William "Bill" (Aileen) Hackley, Sidney; her daughters, E. Kathryn (Fred) Verhasselt, and Rose (Arnold) Thiel, all of Sidney; her brother, Carl Sjostrom, Terry; her sister, Florence Unterseher, Laurel; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren; several stepgreat-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; two daughters, Charlotte Hackley and Mary Ellen Brown; two brothers, Fred Sjostrom and George Sjostrom; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
